Pure Dead Brilliant

I’ve written a few songs now that have been inspired by the city and the people that are found in Glasgow. ‘I will be’ is about shipbuilding on the Clyde and the strength of characters that are found there and ‘saints and sinners’ is another one inspired by this dear green place.

Even on the dullest, wettest of days its possible to raise a smile or to from experiences living here. For example you know you live somewhere a bit different when a tourist stops you in the street and instead of asking for directions to e.g. The Train Station or The Art Gallery they ask in heavily broken English ‘Where I find fried mars bar’

Classic.

I also recently overheard an altercation between a 70yr old plus lady and a bus driver that resulted in her telling him exactly where he could get off. Goanyersel lady.

It’s easy to see that a city with this much character has inspired some great music, art, literature and comedy.

Although recently I have become slightly concerned that a classic image and tourist favourite The Duke of Wellington Statue has been lacking his hat recently.

I hope the council hasn’t quelled this tradition which has been ongoing for some 20 odd years. Not only was the statue probably the most photographed icon of Glasgow it was a useful place to arrange to meet folk ‘by the statue with the cone on his head’. I bet the drunk who first had the eureka moment never imagined it would become a right of passage on a night out! Nice one mate.

So here’s a quick list of ten things I like about Glasgow as I’m now off to find a traffic cone.

  1. The Clyde
  2. Banter & Patter
  3. The Architecture – look up.
  4. The phenomenal number of live music venues and great bands.
  5. Humour and the word eejit.
  6. The Finnieston Crane
  7. Cafe Rio
  8. The pretend we are in Paris - Al Fresco dining in the rain
  9. The Lab Bar
  10. The Granary Bar - my local
